My dad wasn't a general officer, just a colonel, and he wasn't buried at Arlington, just at Ft. Sam Houston, but his funeral was a thing of beauty with an honor guard, a volley of three, and a bugler who played taps marvelously.  Just the way they folded the flag and handed it to my mom bordered on high art.

None of those kids knew my dad, but they honored him as if they had, so I went over to their bus after the service, thanked them, and told them a few anecdotes about my father and what he did in his career with the Air Force.  I don't think anyone ever did that for them before, because they seemed genuinely surprised and appreciative.

Anyway, you are right: The US knows how to honor their military.  Sometimes I think the military is the best thing this country does.
