Pre-Emptive Caveats   [Rich Lowry]

I have a column for tomorrow on the U.S. attorney business. I'm going to be out of pocket all day tomorrow, and unable to address e-mails. So a few pre-emptive things to address your e-mails before you send them:

1) I don't think there's anything wrong per se with removing the U.S. attorneys (I'm where Andy is on this).

2) I'm not calling on Gonzales to resign, but I think it's more likely than not the way things look right now, and I obviously wouldn't be upset about it.

3) Bush has plenty of very talented loyalists. Among the high-profile ones, Karl Rove and Condi Rice come to mind. It's just that there are plenty of not-so-talented loyalists too.

4) Yes, I know Bush did go outside his immediate circle for some heavy-hitters like Powell, Rumsfeld, and Cheney (all of whom, as it happens, have had their reputations tarnished in one way or another by the Iraq war).

5) And for the usual liberal e-mailers: I'm not a neo-con, even if you call me one; no, I'm not going to just “shut up”; no, I don't have trouble sleeping at night, except for the very occasional bout of insomnia.

If there's anything I haven't addressed here, I'll try to get to it Monday!
