Newt Helps Romney   [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

From another smart friend:

The secret beneficiary of all this Newt emergence is your guy Romney.  After 8 years of Bush, the emphasis this time around is going to be on SMART.  Two of the smartest guys around are Newt and Rudy, but they are probably unelectable, for various reasons.

Their presence in the race though — as Rich's correspondent suggests — is a big problem for McCain.  It may also be a problem for George Allen.  I say that with regret because Allen is probably the guy I'd be most likely to support, but he has not bowled me over yet.  On the other hand, Romney already strikes me as smart enough to stand in there with Newt and Rudy, and more electable than both of them.
