Answering Jonah Goldberg   [John Hood]

Yes, Jonah, the poll you cited shows that dog owners favor McCain over Obama by a 43-34 margin. It also shows that cat owners favor McCain by 41-38, a difference in margin that I would attribute mainly to sampling error. I would also note that there are more undecided cat owners, which just stands to reason. They're pickier, and as rugged individualists are a little nervous about McCain's busybody proclivities.

The real gap is between pet owners and non-pet owners. The former give their support to McCain, the latter prefer Obama by a whopping 14 points. It's essentially a canine-feline alliance against the petless, though I note that Obama has promised his daughters they can have a dog after the election. Cats would never let themselves be used in such a Skinnerian fashion.
