Subject: Thompson for POTUS   [Rich Lowry]

E-mail:

Rich,

There seems to be a lot of support for Fred Thompson among conservatives and conservative bloggers, but most D.C. types don't believe he'll run.  Have you got a take on this?

ME: I think he’s seriously considering it, more seriously than I would have thought even a week or so ago.

UPDATE:

An e-mail:

Subject: if he weren't running for President

Wouldn’t Thompson be perfect to replace Gonzales. Wealth of experience, easy confirmation, he’s worked for the president (with Roberts’ confirmation) but is not a lackey of the president.

And the other question is: if Fred jumps in, isn’t he basically a McCain that doesn’t kick the right at every opportunity? A strong center right record, and an ability to articulate the party’s message without a wink to the New York Times or a simple reliance on his biography?
