Soft Porn at the Met   [John Derbyshire]

To the Met last night with Jay Nordlinger to see a fine Norma.

While the folk up there on stage were affirming the glories of Western Civ., however, the firm that prints the Met's playbills (it's Playbill Incorporated, 525 Seventh Avenue, Suite 1801, New York, NY 10018) had something else in mind. Check out the perfume ad facing the title page of the playbill.

New York's Metropolitan Opera House. A main center for the transmission of western culture in the U.S.A. $200 for a good seat in the orchestra. And there, opposite the title page of your playbill, is soft porn.

I don't mind soft porn**. But... the Met?

Oh, and did you think you were going to get away from a Norma post without a link to the Norma review that closes THE WORLD'S GREATEST OPERA NOVEL? Ha!

** I'm not crazy about hard porn. If people want it, though, and it's properly fenced off from people who don't want it, with signposts and all, then hey.
