Friedman v. Hayek   [Jonah Goldberg]

My productivity guy e-mails:

Jonah – for a completely different reason, I was just re-reading some Hayek (never a bad thing to do) when I came across this quote from the preface to the 1956 edition of The Road to Serfdom

“In the present state of opinion, there is some danger that our impatience for quick results may lead us to choose instrument which, though perhaps more efficient for achieving the particular ends, are not compatible with the preservation of a free society.”

At least among NYT op-ed columnists, the ‘present state of opinion’ in 2009 is no different than what it was in 1956.
