Youth-League Football Atrocity [John Derbyshire]
My personal Villain of the Month is Dan Hinkle, commissioner of the South County Youth Association, one of 23 clubs that make up the Fairfax County (Va.) Youth Football League.
Mr. Hinkle fired the coaches of a youth team after they moved his son from defense to offense. That was for the final game of the season, which the team went on and won, putting them in the postseason playoffs. Now bereft of coaches, they have had to drop out of postseason play.
Relevant quote from Mr. Hinkle: "Scott does not sit out on defense — ever. He goes in and stays in. That includes all practices, scrimmages and games. This entire league exists so he can play defense on the best team in his weight class... He is my son, I own the league, and he plays every snap on defense."
Read the whole appalling story here.
Never mind Ahmadinejad, Mugabe, and Kim Jong Il. As abuse of power goes, they are mere amateurs alongside Commissioner Hinkle. This man should be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail. A regular horse-whipping would let him off too lightly.
