Tonight's Speech by Prez   [John Derbyshire]

I have an engagement that will keep me away from the TV, and no-one chez Derb (including me) can work the VCR reliably; so I won't be joining in the realtime blogging on the speech, & likely won't have anything to say afterwards.

None of which matters since I know, & have already said, that the speech will be a wimp-out, some gassy platitudes (nation of immigrants... family vales... out of the shadows...), fortified with a few vague but firm-sounding proposals that will make it look as if the feds are doing something — boob bait for the yahoos, enough to keep 'em quiet till something else is in the news and we can get back to open borders, which is what the admin. truly wants.

The National Guard thing really appeals to the open-borders people as a yahoo-placating strategy.  (a) It won't do much, (b) It won't cost much, and (c) It's highly temporary: send the Guard in this month, pull 'em out next month.  Once you build a wall, it STAYS there — no way GWB will go for that.
