Huckabee Blames McCain-Feingold   [David Freddoso]

Word is that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won't be here today because he missed his flight. He said that he didn't want to take a private plane because he said that then he'd have had to pay the full rate under McCain-Feingold.

For those keeping track, Brownback, Huckabee, and Tancredo have all cancelled. The "Big Four" are (or were) all here, and so is Ron Paul — who had a boisterous breakfast crowd this morning, and urged Republicans to embrace his "old" Republicanism over the "neoconservatism" that predominated prior to the Iraq War.

Reporters here remarked of Rep. Duncan Hunter's speech last night that it could have been delivered by Gov. Jenny Granholm (D). Granholm used foreign trade with China as her scapegoat during her re-election battle — "Michigan has 7.2 percent unemployment because of China, not because I've helped create a hostile business climate and I'm trying to raise taxes." Duncan Hunter has been hammering the same theme.

The Fair Taxers are here today, as they have been at several other GOP events. But they haven't been doing as well as they did in other places. I saw their signs being torn down by hotel staff because they were hung on outdoor railings. They held a panel discussion in a room next door to where I am, and no one showed.

Romney is to speak at any moment, then Fred Thompson meets the press here at 2:30.
