GOP/CDU   [Andrew Stuttaford]

While there are plenty around here who appear to enjoy trashing John McCain (I strongly disagree with him on a good number of isues, but I reckon he deserves better than some of the anathematizing to which he has recently been subject), can we take a little time to remember who actually signed the (simply appalling) McCain-Feingold bill into law? Equally, John Lott's recent article on NRO reminds us that we should also take note of the administration's latest insult to what's left of small government conservatism - its stance on the D.C. gun case. What, I wonder, will be next?

The GOP's transformation into an American CDU is far more than a matter of Huckabee. He's only the acceleration of a trend that has been under way for years, a trend nourished and encouraged by this president and, for that matter, much of the GOP's congressional leadership. And it's going to get worse.
