Opening for a Leader [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
This reader is onto something — whoever the Republican nominee is, he should lead on this issue:
I didn’t watch last night’s debate (in part because I agree with Ms. Holmes’ assessment of Hillary’s voice), but I know that I can come to The Corner and get the high points, so for starters, allow me to thank you and your staff for that. You, Mr. Lowry, et. al. have saved me from the urge to put my size 8 ½ through the TV screen.
Now, you say that Hillary’s withering and flip-flopping on illegal immigration toward the end of the debate last night was a good thing for Rudy and Romney. But wasn’t it Sen. Thompson who just put out a somewhat-detailed thumbnail sketch (oxymoron?) of an illegal immigration plan?
Illegal immigration could be the issue that manages to separate the GOP both from the Dems and from President Bush. (Separating the GOP from Pres. Bush could be important in trying to capture the swing voter, many of whom have bought into the MSM rhetoric about him, but who are also concerned about illegal immigration.) If illegal immigration can be irrevocably connected to National Security in the minds of the swing voter (for most in the GOP already buy it), I say we’re definitely looking at a winner.
