Ramesh, the problem, as always, lies in the definition of 'civility'. On the second point, I think you are blending two distinct topics. Do I think that a private university has a right to establish a speech code? Sure. Do I think that that private university is right to do so? By and large, and subject to some very basic exceptions, no.
Kathryn, I understand what you mean by that description of Bill Donahue (even if I wouldn't fully subscribe to it), nevertheless, I find it impossible to avoid the thought that, by so skilfully playing the 'victim' game, he does his own bit to contribute to a public culture of grievance, platitude and corrosively insincere 'respect'.
Jonah, are there double standards? Yes, and it's infuriating, but signing up for the 'Coalition of the Oppressed' (to use your phrase) is not, I think, the best way to deal with that particular problem.
