US President George W. Bush charged Monday that Iran has openly declared that it seeks nuclear weapons — an inaccurate accusation at a time of sharp tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The AFP report is correct and the president got it wrong, and, to be sure, it's important to get such things right. Bush, evidently aware of the report, was more careful when discussing Iran's nuclear ambitions at today's press conference:
They have expressed their desire to be able to enrich uranium which we believe is a step toward having a nuclear weapons program.
There you have it. Would anyone now care to dispute Bush's interpretation of Tehran's actions?
