Calling All tactians at NRO   [Lisa Schiffren]

I have an e-mail here from a concerned conservative in Florida, who asks the critical question — who to vote for if you don't think Fred can pull it out, and you wish to stop McCain. Mark Steyn, Andy, Rich, Ramesh, Kathryn — I know some of you like McCain, but you horserace guys must have some sense about this. I suspect you just have to wait till the day of and see what the polls say. It will probably be Mitt, though it still could be Rudy. But I am no tactician. "I've been leaning Fred for some time and was *really* hoping that he'd pull off a surprise win or convincing 2nd place in South Carolina. Then I could vote for him in Florida and hope to see him move on. Now, despite your recent change of heart, I'm thinking that it is more important to stop McCain and stop Huckabee — and that a vote for Fred, to my sorrow, will not do either. I'm not wild about either Mitt or Rudy, but I think either is every bit as electable as McCain, and I don't believe that any fig leaf of a conservative veep will make McCain any more worth voting for. So now I'm in a quandary as to what to do next Tuesday. I suppose I'll watch the polls and try to figure out where to put my money and my vote for the last run in the hope of at least getting Huckabee out of the race in time for conservatives to rally around another candidate and stop McCain once and for all. "
