Giuliani and Abortion   [Peter Suderman]

Several readers have written in to express skepticism about Giuliani's chances with social conservatives. One from Alabama writes, in a fairly representative email:

I will never, ever cast a vote for Rudy Giuliani. Social issues are very important to me — life issues are a deal breaker. It will be easy not to vote for him in the primary; if he is the Republican candidate in 2008, I'll stay home (or more likely, I'll go to the polling place and not vote in the presidential contest).

…Not voting will, however, save me from the distasteful prospect of casting a ballot for someone who thinks killing babies is simply a "choice."

So, sure, "there's much we still need to learn about Giuliani." But I've already learned everything I need to know.

Like I said, there is clearly reason to be wary of his abortion stance. But I think it’s useful to look at Friday’s editorial on Giuliani, which talked about how a pro-abortion candidate might end up being “operationally pro-life.”
