Scarfing the Marble Ceiling   [Jonah Goldberg]

Mona- I guess I disagree. I haven't followed this closely, but I was under the impression (via Jim) that Pelosi wore the headscarf to a Mosque. If that's the case it doesn't bother me at all. It's good manners. Yes, there is hypocrisy in that Pelosi represents a wing of liberalism that is at constant war with symbols of "patriarchy." So if you want to condemn the hypocrisy, I have no objection. But, I don't see why we should call good manners a "disgrace." Rather, we should say it is a disgrace that she doesn't similar respect to religious authority and custom in her own civilization (assuming she doesn't. I don't know what Pelosi wears to church).

As for the substance of her trip, I think that was disgraceful for all the reasons mentioned in our editorial and in the Washington Post's.

Update: From a reader:

Jonah, according to the outspoken Syrian dissidents Nancy also wore the
scarf and whatever they call the black dress during her walk through the
streets and market. Not exactly a picture of feminist strength, ehhh?

Update II: And then there's Laura Bush.
