America's Future Foundation Awards $10,000 Cash Prize in College Blogger Award Contest
April 14, 2008 – Today, America's Future Foundation awards $10,000 to Dartmouth University senior Joe Malchow as the winner of AFF's College Blogger Contest. Malchow founded Dartblog, which played a leading role in electing four independent alumni to Dartmouth's Board of Trustees and defeating a proposed new constitution. Judges awarded a second-place prize of $1,000 to Oregon Commentator and third-place to Surveillance State.
The contest, open to all graduate and undergraduate bloggers age 25 and younger, is intended to encourage original, liberty-minded blogger-journalism on college campuses. Describing the importance of blogging as a tool in journalism, competition judge Jonah Goldberg of National Review stated, "For good or for ill, blogging has become the primary arena for talent development in journalism as well as the indispensable means of working around the limitations of the traditional media. My hearty congrats to Dartblog for the first in what I hope will be many victories for its band of happy warriors."
Judges evaluated the blogs on their impact on their college campuses and effectiveness in spreading conservative and libertarian ideas. Other judges on the panel included conservative and libertarian bloggers and journalists Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit; Radley Balko of The Agitator and Reason; Jonathan Adler of The Volokh Conspiracy; Robert Bluey of the Heritage Foundation and RobertBluey.com; Mary Katharine Ham of TownHall.com; and Megan McArdle of Asymmetrical Information at The Atlantic.
AFF Executive Director David Kirby expressed great satisfaction with the quality of the competition in the contest's first year. "I'm so pleased that AFF has had the opportunity to shine a light on so many of the talented writers and journalists who are up-and-comers in the fight for liberty," Kirby said. "We're looking forward to building on this year's success to turn the AFF College Blogger Contest into a consistent leader in encouraging freedom-minded writers to speak up on campuses across the country."
