Re: Remembering Father Drinan [Tim Graham]
Radical pacifist Colman McCarthy, years removed from his column-writing for the Washington Post, wrote an appreciation of Father/Congressman Drinan for the Post today, mocking "rankled conservative American Catholics" like William F. Buckley and Pat Buchanan that Drinan was "a dangerous liberal...seen as too pro-choice."
McCarthy mocked Pope John Paul II for ordering Drinan to step away from worldly legislating: "John Paul, knowing that Jesuits take a vow of loyalty to popes, had his way. And who replaced the dangerously liberal Father Drinan? The more dangerously liberal Barney Frank—as ardent an advocate for abortion rights as he was for gay rights. If there is a God, the Frank-for-Drinan trade surely had Him laughing at the Vatican's expense."
McCarthy clearly misses the point that from the Church's perspective, it's better to have a secular Congressman voting for untrammeled abortion than provide the "role model" of a priest who votes for untrammeled abortion.
