Giving it Away [John Derbyshire]
No prostitution thread should pass without mention of an anecdote from the late Quentin Crisp, who for much of his life lived in rented rooms in seedy areas of London.
The landlady at one of these places was a keen observer of her neighborhood, spending hours peering through the lace curtains at her front window, giving Crisp, when he was in the room with her, a running commentary on the inhabitants of her street, with much diapproval of their courting habits and liaisons.
According to Crisp, when one young woman emerged from a nearby house, the landlady called him to the window. "Look! — See that one? She's the worst of the lot! Any girl will do it for money, but that one — she does it just to oblige!"
