Four Points? [Rich Lowry]
As of yesterday, folks in the McCain campaign were saying their internals Saturday night showed the race tightening some and at four points, around where the Gallup traditional, IBD and Zogby have the race (other polls show a bigger Obama lead, of course). McCain needs to close the race further, and the campaign believes if they are within 2-3 points before election day perhaps they can get a New Hampshire-style surprise of the sort that defeated Obama despite an orgy of premature celebration in the media. But no one is kidding themselves about how grim the prospects are.
