Bush's embarrassing Libya embrace [Michael Rubin]
Just after Bush writes to Qadhafi seeking to strengthen ties, the Libyan regime upholds its death sentence against five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor on spurious charges. On top of this, after his speech at the June 2007 "Democracy and Security" Conference in Prague, Bush said that Condoleezza Rice would visit Tripoli this fall (a planned visit confirmed by other high-ranking State Department officials), thereby rewarding Qadhafi with legitimacy entirely undeserved, all the more so after he humiliated the Deputy Secretary of State. Note to Bush: Kissing up to dictators does not make them compliant; it only makes them more defiant. Don't be the new Jimmy Carter.
