Is There Risk in McCain's Suspension? [Shannen Coffin]
The consensus here seems to be that there is little risk in McCain's suspension of his campaign, and the promise of great reward. But I wonder whether there isn't some serious risk. This Politico story seems to suggest that Democrats are starting to frame McCain's intervention as a complication to negotiations. Whether true or not (and undoubtedly it is not), Democrats may well seek to blame John McCain for "injecting Presidential politics" into the negotiations if a deal falls apart. That seems a silly argument, but silly arguments have been known to become fact in election years. McCain's challenge is to make his return to Washington appear productive, whether a deal is struck or not.
