Biden Said What?   [Yuval Levin]

Jason Horowitz of the New York Observer interviews Senator Joe Biden, and quotes him saying the following about Barack Obama:

Mr. Biden is equally skeptical—albeit in a slightly more backhanded way—about Mr. Obama. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

The first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy? Just what is he saying about every other “mainstream African American”? (And just what does that mean anyway?) You have to imagine Biden was letting his mouth run ahead of his brain, and it doesn’t take much to imagine Biden doing that. But on the other hand, perhaps only someone foolish enough to believe such a thing could also be foolish enough to say it.
