Gerson on Huckabee   [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Gerson writes that on domestic policy "Huckabee has the strongest general election message of any Republican." That depends on the level of generality at which that message is defined. If what Gerson means is that Huckabee's mix of social conservatism and government activism would sell, he is probably right. But I suspect that Huckabee's anti-corporate, anti-trade, and anti-evolution rhetoric would drive away the party's remaining higher-income supporters, while his support for a national sales tax would create political vulnerabilities up and down the income scale.
