More zarqawi [Rich Lowry]
Just talked to an administration official who is generally an optimist on Iraq. Says “it's too early to tell” what Zarqawi's death will mean for the country. And, “I'd be leery of those who say this is a strategic turning point.” Emphasizes that Zarqawi was far, far from responsible for the entire insurgency: “We need to continue the pressure not just on al Qaeda in Iraq but on former regime types.”
Still, it's very good news: “This should give heart to those who think we'll never get bin Laden. It's just a matter of time.” And the credit obviously goes to the troops: “This is an absolutely great day for the troops. They have really persevered and broken up this network and should be congratulated for their persistence.”
Finally, I asked about the selections to fill out the positions of interior and defense ministers: “They are known to us, but they have not been in any positions of authority before. I'm told they're good, and now they have to perform.”
