Just spoke with that Republican source who has been maintaining "it's not over yet" and who explains the three categories of races Republicans face. They are defending some OPEN seats that are, of course, always tougher races. Then there are the "stupid members," a category that includes Rep. Don (I cheated on my wife but didn't strangle my mistress) Sherwood and those who ignored warnings that Republicans faced a really tough year and advice that they had to work hard and early. In this veteran's opinion, this latter group includes Rep. Gil Gutknecht in MN and Rep. Jim Walsh in NY (an Appropriations Cardinal in trouble?!) Finally, there are the tough races with tested veterans of tough races, like Rep. Heather Wilson in New Mexico, Rep. Anne Northrup in KY and Rep. Clay Shaw in FL. The glimmers of GOP optimism rest in part on the ability of this last group to survive yet again.
