The Great Mystery of the "Raise Taxes" Whisperer [Stephen Spruiell]
Some weird blog buzz today concerning a disembodied whisper at the end of one of Russert's questions to Romney during last night's debate:
Russert: Governor Romney, you are a big fan of Ronald Reagan. Will you do for Social Security what Ronald Reagan did in 1983?
[Whispered:] raise taxes
Romney: I’m not going to raise taxes. What I’m going to do…
Russert: Ronald Reagan raised payroll tax and he also raised the retirement age and he saved Social Security…
I heard this too, and I just figured it was Brian Williams leaning over to remind Russert to add the "raise taxes" part — probably the only time anyone ever had to remind Russert to bait the hook on a gotcha question.
This explanation makes the most sense. But on the left it's some big mystery: Did Mitt Romney cheat with an earpiece? It's all very curious, etc. Can you imagine if Romney was wearing an earpiece turned up so loud his microphone picked up the sound? It would have melted his brain worse than Van Halen.
