Ron reax   [Mark Steyn]

A reader responds to that St Anselm's NH poll with Ron Paul at 7 per cent by noting the fine print:

44% of those who support Paul describe themselves as liberal. His success is nothing but the moveon crowd supporting him as a true anti-war candidate.

Ah, but in New Hampshire "independents" are the biggest single grouping of voters and can choose whether to vote in the Republican or Democrat primary. They go where the action is. In 2000, Bill Bradley was the insurgent who failed to insurge so they skipped the Al Gore coronation and went over to the GOP booths to boost McCain. The more it looks like Hillary's a shoo-in, the more "independents" will be minded to cast their vote in the more turbulent Republican field. It doesn't matter if half your support is from anti-war liberals if enough of them turn out to make mischief in the GOP primary.
