Whoa, Whoa, Whoa.... [Jonah Goldberg]
Ross Douthat, returning to his frequent handwringing over too many superhero movies,* writes: "And I think it's reasonable to fret about a compounding effect. Obviously, an industry that can remake The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is an industry that can remake anything..."
Now, maybe I'm misreading him. But I could swear there is a tone of disdain for this classic staple 4:30 Movie. I for one loved the original of The Taking of Pelham 123 and I look forward to the remake — which I didn't know was in the works until just now. Coincidentally, however, I just downloaded a rental of Pelham 123 on iTunes the other day. I will rewatch it soon, and if it's only half as good as I remember, Douthat will be made to pay for his slander!
* Oh, and while I think Ross makes good points about the surplus of superhero movies, isn't the question whether or not the movies that aren't being made because all these superhero movies are crowding them out would be better than the relatively harmless ones that are being made? I'll take more Dark Knights and Spider-Men over more Natural Born Killers any day.
