Conservative Movies [Andrew Stuttaford]
Kathryn, this selection of films has made for a terrific read. I remain, however, just as unsure as before as to what exactly makes a "conservative" movie (looking at some of the picks, it seemed to me that not-being-left-wing was sometimes enough and sometimes, well...). This may be because there are many different types of conservative (often with different and sometimes clashing agendas) or it might reflect the fact that this exercise has been an attempt to shoehorn certain films into a politically defined category into which they do not naturally belong. Nevertheless, fun to do...
One thing that was striking, however, was (bar one exception) the absence of anything to do with the entrepreneur. Unaccountably The Aviator was missing, and so was Tucker: the Man and his Dream. But I'm probably just reflecting my own prejudices.
And to reflect another, I'll add No Country For Old Men, a dystopian masterpiece with a Hobbesian view of the world that ought to appeal to the bleaker among us.
