The Sourpuss Vote   [John Derbyshire]

Could Sarah Palin bring out the sourpuss vote? A lot of Republicans — here's one — have been planning do do anything but vote for McCain or Obama: abstention, third party, suicide — anything. Then John-John goes and puts a conservative on the ticket. What's a sourpuss to do?

It would be presumptuous of me to clain to speak for all sourpusses (sourpi?), but here's where I am personally at this point.

If Sarah Palin shows signs, or even signs of signs, that she is trying for some DC "strange new respect" — if, for example, she were to declare that, by jiminy, yes siree, comprehensive immigration reform is just what this country needs — then I shall be taking a walk on the dark side.

If, on the other hand, she stands firm as the Sarah Palin we've been learning about this past few days, then I can see myself following Ann Coulter's advice:  "Get drunk and vote for McCain."  The first part, at least, will be pleasurable.
