Wonkette, Edwards & Israel   [Jonah Goldberg]

In my bubonic plague induced torpor, I'd missed that Edwards had called Israel the greatest threat to world peace. I'd missed Jim Geraghty commenting on same. And I missed Wonkette defending Edwards by saying that Edwards was “stating the obvious” but you can't do that today because it “requires taking your lips off Israel’s ass for a few seconds, and that’s fatal for any American politician with presidential ambitions. This isn’t because Jews get upset or Israel’s feelings will get hurt or anything. It’s because of batshit insane evangelical American Jesus Freaks who have to love and protect Israel so Jesus will come back and destroy it.”

Seth Gitell has more on all of this.

Correction: The phrasing above — which I took from Gitell — is unfair to Edwards. He said the greatest short-term threat to world peace . . . was the possibility that Israel would bomb Iran's nuclear facilities.” That's a big difference. See the post above for more.
