Huck! [Rich Lowry]
Some e-mails reacting to my column this morning. A friend writes:
Rich-
…I think it’s worth considering: Huckabee is a Republican John Edwards (the 2004 edition). I don’t mean that as an insult at all. Some silver tongued Southerners become Baptist ministers, some become trial lawyers. Both J.Ed and Huck have admirable up-from-working class stories, both speak the language of regular folks, both shore up potentially suspicious constituencies, and both have excellent stump speeches that are nonetheless laced with gauzy flimflam.
Another friend writes:
Here’s the other thing – he’s a September 10th candidate. Never speaks of – or has any clue about – foreign policy. He’d be great if he were running 91 or 92 like his fellow Hope native. More economic anxiety and less nat’l security worry.
And from a Huck supporter:
Rich,
…You had several valid points and I’m sure that we, as Huckabee supporters, will take into account and try to rectify any shortcomings.
But, you are missing the point of this campaign – First off, I must say that I am not officially affiliated with Hucakbee for President, or the Explore Huckabee organization – I am an independent supporter that attempts to “rally the troops”. That being said, the point of the surge in the Huckabee campaign (and there is a surge fundraising too – We have raised over $350,000 since Tuesday last week. Do the math) is not so much that Mike is a better option – but rather – Mike is the only option. From a conservative point of view, Mike has all the points nailed down. There is not another conservative that qualifies better than he does. From a likeability point of view, no one even comes close. I have been discussing this with several of my friends, some of which are republicans, and some which are democrats, and they all agree that they really like what Mike has to say. Television personalities like Bill Maher, Alan Colmes, John Stewart and even Bill Clinton like his personality and his ability to communicate without causing a washout in the discussion.
Put up one on one with the democrats, he is the only one that has a chance of winning. Rudy v Hillary – what is the difference? He is as big on values we oppose as it gets. Romney v Hillary, what is that? Romney can’t be trusted with his own positions, because they are not his positions in the first place. I like Fred, but really – he will get crushed by Hillary’s team and in the debates. Mike will be able to communicate and hit the ball out of the park when he goes up against her and any others. We have seen to before and will see it again…
